This 20th-century Romanian novel by the hoaxer, poet, and artist Mateiu Ion Caragiale, rediscovered at the beginning of the 21st century and the subject of two competing English translations, is being published in Russian for the first time. The action unfolds in old Bucharest, amid intrigue, love affairs, and the struggle for survival. The main characters—Paşadia, Pantazi, and Pîrgu, inseparable companions from different social classes—embody the characteristics of Romanian society at the turning point of an era. Disillusioned with life and its lost meaning, they seek to find it in sensual pleasures, yearning for bygone ideals. Longing for the past is closely linked with the theme of the decline of the aristocracy, and grief is expressed in almost biological terms of inexorable degeneration. The reader becomes a witness to the involution of the aristocratic spirit - the path from power and vitalism to the asthenic melancholy and hedonism of the last descendants of the family.
