The Galleria dell'Accademia in Venice is an unusual museum. It is not a collection of dusty copies and casts, but a comprehensive encyclopedia of the Venetian school of painting. The collection risked becoming an "orphan museum," since after the fall of the Venetian Republic (1797) under Napoleon, masterpieces from the abolished monasteries and public buildings of the city and surrounding area were brought here. However, having found its identity in the unified Italy in the mid-19th century, the Galleria dell'Accademia became a center for the study of Venetian "genius loci."

Within the museum's walls, visitors are treated to treasures from magnificent churches and palaces that evoke the image of Venice through the works of its school of painting, which outlived the historical dimension of the city-state: paintings by Bellini, Giorgione, Titian, Veronese, Tintoretto, Tiepolo, Canaletto, Guardi, and many others.
