By popular demand from priests, the Moscow Patriarchate Publishing House has released the Lenten Service Book in a medium-sized analogion format. Like the pocket-sized version, this book will be especially useful for novice clergy, as well as for those whose additional church obediences prevent them from frequently celebrating Great Lent services and thus easily navigating their statutory peculiarities.
The first part of the "Lenten Service Book" covers the period of Holy Lent: the repeated services of the weekdays, as well as the Matins service on "funeral" Saturdays, the statute for the Sunday of the Veneration of the Cross with its particulars regarding the bringing out of the Holy Cross, the Matins service on Thursday of the fifth week ("Standing of Mary"), and Matins on Saturday of the fifth week (Praise of the Most Holy Theotokos). The book concludes with the Passion service and the Menologion from February to April.
For ease of use, the pictorials and Vespers are provided in two versions: the first version is for when the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts is not celebrated, and the second version is for when it is. Since there are more days without the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts, the book first completes the cycle for these days: pictorials, Vespers, Litia for the Dead, and Great Compline. Then comes the version for Wednesday and Friday (or another day if it falls on a church or saint's feast day): pictorials with the appropriate ending, Vespers, and the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts.
The second and third parts of the "Lenten Service Book" are a daily sequence of services, beginning with Matins on the Saturday of St. Righteous Lazarus and concluding with the Liturgy on Holy Saturday and the prayer of blessing the bread and wine afterward. The second part ends on Holy Wednesday. The third part covers the period from Holy Thursday to Holy Saturday. For convenience, all services, each with its own distinctive features, are presented separately for each day, beginning with Holy Thursday. The odes of Holy Thursday, as in the first part, include the entrance prayers. After the odes of Holy Thursday, come the vesting prayers and the proskomedia service. The Liturgy of St. Basil the Great, beginning with Vespers, is included in its entirety on Holy Thursday.
