Russian émigré writer and naturalist Nikolai Apollonovich Baikov (1872-1958), widely published in Japan and other countries, officer of the CER Security Guard, author of the famous "Great Van" and vis-à-vis of V.K. Arsenyev in Manchuria, who lived half a century in China and was buried in Brisbane (Australia), was known in his homeland only to a narrow circle of literary scholars and readers until the early 1990s. This volume of the Collection offers the reader two novels by Nikolai Apollonovich Baikov - "Great Van" and "Black Captain", with illustrations by the author.

The novel about the Manchurian tiger "Great Van" is the writer's most famous work. The book “The Black Captain” about the service and life of the Trans-Amur border guards who guarded the Chinese Eastern Railway is largely autobiographical, since N. Baikov himself was an officer of the Security Guard in the early 1900s.
