The book by English art historian James Stourton is dedicated to the most famous collectors of Europe and Asia of the XX century. The author tells us that the subject of collecting became any work of art: from primitive masks to modernist painting and sculpture, from Chinese porcelain to European silverware, and collectors became different people with different financial capabilities: industrial magnates, and generic aristocrats, and famous couturiers, and simple clerks. In many ways, it was collectors and their demand for certain art objects that shaped the art market in the 20th century and, in a sense, the position on the art scene as such.
