Pyotr Yakovlevich Chaadaev was a Russian philosopher and publicist, declared insane by the government for his writings, which sharply criticized the reality of Russian life. His works were banned from publication in Imperial Russia. According to Chaadaev, notions of Russia's special, great role and its superiority over the West led to spiritual stagnation and hindered the country's development.

Fyodor Ivanovich Tyutchev was a Russian poet, diplomat, and publicist. In his publicistic works, Tyutchev developed a "theory of the Russian Empire," imbued with a distinctive Orthodox character; one of Tyutchev's main ideas was the creation of a union of Slavic Orthodox states under the auspices of Russia.

This book contains the most significant works of P. Ya. Chaadaev and F. I. Tyutchev on the aforementioned topics.
