The historical novel "Evenings with Peter the Great" is being published to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of its author, the distinguished Russian writer Daniil Aleksandrovich Granin (1919-2017). It is a fusion of documentary and fiction, where the author is not only a writer and novelist but also a historian, a researcher of the phenomenon of power and the individual in power. The novel reveals the inner world of the Russian autocrat during crucial moments in Russia's history. The author explores Peter as an individual, a hard-working tsar, a scholarly tsar, and a warrior tsar. He constructs the plot based on previously unknown details of the private life of the first Russian emperor, using excerpts from archival documents. It is no coincidence that several of the novel's characters are contemporary. They passionately debate Peter and his reforms, clearly drawing parallels between the events of three hundred years ago and the present day. The book includes more than one hundred illustrations (portraits, paintings, engravings, geographical maps, museum exhibits), visually “reinforcing” the artistic text and providing a more complete picture of the era described.
