"Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka" was Gogol's first collection, and it immediately made his name famous. Pushkin laughed while reading these stories and praised the young writer highly.

Gogol subtly captured the fashion for folk themes and framed the book as "vechernitsy"—tales told at sunset. A den-like tale of a devil stealing the moon is followed by a dark legend of a sorcerer. Folklore, satire, and mysticism create a world where the funny coexists with the terrifying.

The collection consists of two parts and is united by the character of the narrator, the beekeeper Rudoy Panko. These stories intertwine folk tales, mystical events, and vivid scenes from village life so naturally that the line between fiction and reality almost disappears. The everyday coexists with the incredible, but humanity remains the greatest miracle among miracles.
