Far from the Mad Crowd is the story of an independent farm owner whose attention is sought by three: a rich gentleman, a desperate sergeant and a prudent farmer. The difficult problem of choice, the eternal drama of the relationship between a man and a woman, intrigue, mystery and real passion in the novel, which became the first literary success of the author. Gardy touched the soul strings of readers for three centuries. His novel is still considered scandalous and violates the foundations of the society.
Far from the Mad Crowd is part of the so-called series of Wessex novels, where Gardy broadly and powerfully depicts the elements of popular life in such a way that there are no equals in this respect in nineteenth-century English literature. In 1912, Gardy included him in the list of Romances of Characters and Circumstances, along with the following books: Return to the Homeland, Mayor of Casterbridge, In the Edge of the Woods, Tess of the D'Urbervilles, and Jude the Invisible.
An interesting fact: Gardy accompanied the publication of his works with carefully drawn maps of the county, by training he was an architect. By creating the "fictional" county of Wessex, Gardy showed the collapse of the old way of life in rural England on concrete human destinies.
