The Vatican is one of the world's most brilliant museum complexes. Its collections of mesmerizing frescoes and paintings, altarpieces and sculptures were assembled by the Roman high priests, each of whom was a vividly unique personality. The majestic palaces and halls of the Vatican were designed and decorated by great masters: Bramante and Michelangelo, Raphael and Botticelli, Perugino and Ghirlandaio, Pinturicchio and Vasari, the magnificent Bernini and many other architects, sculptors and painters who strove to make the papal abode rich and solemn. Beautiful paintings still cover the walls and vaults of the Sistine Chapel, Raphael's Stans and Loggias, the Borgia Apartments, and the Nicollina Chapel.
Stanza paintings, altarpieces, precious predellae were brought here from many cities in Italy simply as wonderful works of art, without any organizing idea. Pope Pius IV ordered the collection of disparate paintings from the papal palaces, thus laying the foundation for a systematized museum collection. The masterpieces of the Vatican will always fascinate us, for among them are Giotto's large Triptych, Melozzo da Forlì's enchanting Musing Angels, Ercole de Roberti's rare predella with the Miracles of St. Vincenzo Ferrer, Raphael's Madonna di Foligno, Coronation of Mary and Transfiguration, "Leonardo da Vinci's St. Jerome, Giovanni Bellini's mournful Lamentation over the Dead Christ, Titian's Altarpiece from the Church of San Nicolo dei Frari, Caravaggio's Deposition from the Cross, Poussin's Martyrdom of St. Erasmus, and the most famous works by Guercino and Guido Reni. The paintings and frescoes collected at the Vatican offer an insight into the history of painting from the Middle Ages to the 18th century and the highest peaks of art. Many of these works have never before been reproduced in our editions
