Vasily Turkin is a real frontline poem written by the war correspondent Alexander Tvardovsky right on the front lines. Turkin embodied the main features of the Russian national character: courage and good-naturedness, wit and recklessness, selflessness and economy. Private and officers saw in the protagonist not a fictional character, but a comrade in arms. Former front-line soldiers recalled that they met Turkin in the war, and wrote about it to Tvardovsky. Some of the letters are included in this edition. The poem was not just popular, it became an integral part of front life, and thanks to its fairy-tale style it is easy to read even today. Orest Vereisky's drawings became a textbook image of Turkin. A simple and so native face, a squinting look, a stocky figure and an unflagging thirst for life, which is evident in the whole appearance of the protagonist, made him the most recognizable literary character of the Great Patriotic War.
