"Vasily Tyorkin" is a real frontline poem written by war correspondent Alexander Tvardovsky right on the front line. Tyorkin embodied the main features of the Russian national character: courage and good nature, resourcefulness and recklessness, selflessness and thrift. Privates and officers saw in the main character not a fictional character, but a comrade in arms. Former frontline soldiers
recalled that they met Tyorkin in the war, and wrote about it to Tvardovsky. Some of the letters were included in this edition. The poem was not just popular, it became an integral part of frontline life, and thanks to the fairy tale style, it is still easy to read today.

The textbook image of Tyorkin became the drawings of Orest Vereisky. A simple and familiar face, a squinting look, a stocky figure and an indefatigable thirst for life, shining through the entire appearance of the main character, made him the most recognizable literary character of the Great Patriotic War.
