Valkyries... Mysterious creatures of Scandinavian culture. Viking myths about them try to elevate the tragedy of war - to make pain and suffering heroic feats. Intertwined realities of the earthly and afterlife world, ancient legends, the strength of the spirit of beautiful warriors and their personal stories not one century make scientists think about who are the Valkyries and did they really exist? Drawing on the latest historical, archaeological evidence and ancient fascinating texts, the author attempts to reconcile the legends of monstrous mothers and terrifying warrior maidens with the daily lives of these women, showing them in their childhood, young adulthood, adulthood and on the threshold of death. Joanna Katrin Fridriksdottir studied at the Universities of Reykjavik and Brighton before completing a PhD in Medieval Literature at Oxford University in 2010. She then did a research fellowship at Harvard University.
