In the first part of the book, Rainer Zitelmann, a German historian and sociologist, and successful entrepreneur, draws on statistics and historical evidence to demonstrate the fallacy of ten of the most common objections to capitalism: that it leads to hunger and poverty, growing inequality, unnecessary consumption, environmental destruction and climate change, financial crises and wars; that under capitalism, profit is paramount at the expense of humanity, monopolies reign, and democracy is destroyed. The second part examines the most tragic episodes of attempts to build socialism in countries such as the USSR, China, and Cambodia. The third part publishes the results of a unique sociological survey commissioned by the author, conducted in 21 countries. The purpose of the survey was to determine how residents of Europe, Asia, South and North America, and Australia (structured by gender, age, and political views) view capitalism and economic freedom. A separate chapter is devoted to the results of this survey in Russia.
