Petr Sarandinaki's book recounts the nearly 30-year search for the remains of the Romanov imperial family, first near Yekaterinburg and then in the Perm region, in which the author was directly involved. He draws on a wide variety of sources—documents, diaries, memoirs, as well as the results of numerous forensic examinations and DNA analyses of the recovered remains.

Sarandinaki participated in the forensic expedition to Yekaterinburg in the late 1990s to search for the remains of Grand Duchess Maria Nikolaevna and Tsarevich Alexei. From 2009 to 2021, he led international forensic expeditions to Perm in search of the remains of Grand Duke Mikhail Alexandrovich, the younger brother of Emperor Nicholas II, which remain missing.
