The book is based on the eternal connection between literature and history. The time frame of the study covers the period from 1917 to 1937, a time of crisis for Russian culture in general and literary culture in particular. The author focuses on the work of Vladislav Khodasevich, Yuri Tynyanov and Mikhail Bulgakov, who turned to the genre of biography in search of "the hero of their time", creating works of fiction, literary biographies and plays. Their heroes became A. S. Pushkin, A. S. Griboyedov, G. R. Derzhavin and J.-B. Moliere. A. Brintlinger sees in the appeal to the genre of biography, characteristic of all European, not only Russian literature of this period, an attempt to comprehend their past and through it the present, to understand their literary predecessors and themselves as writers, as well as the need of the reader of that time in the models for the construction of their own lives. The split in Russian culture between those who remained in Soviet Russia and those who became part of the vast diaspora creates a fascinating opportunity to explore the role of biography in this challenging era.
