Viktor Nekrasov's story "In the Trenches of Stalingrad" became one of the brightest examples of the so-called "lieutenant's" prose. A front-line soldier, an architect by education, who had no previous literary experience, Nekrasov managed to convey a personal feeling of war. This story is not so much about heroism and victories, although each of the characters can rightfully be called a hero, but about inner fear, confusion, a habit of death, the ability to preserve humanity even where there are no more people left.
Vadim Rostovtsev's engravings, clear and merciless, like the sketches of a field correspondent, reflect the plot events and convey the author's attitude towards them.
