Victor Nekrasov's story "In the Trenches of Stalingrad" became one of the brightest examples of the so-called "lieutenant's" prose. A front-line soldier, an architect by training, who had no previous literary experience, Nekrasov was able to convey a personal sense of war. This story is not so much about heroism and victories, although each of the characters can rightfully be called a hero, as about inner fear, confusion, the habit of death, the ability to preserve humanity even where there are no more people.
Vadim Rostovtsev's engravings, clear and merciless, like sketches of a field correspondent, reflect the plot events and convey the author's attitude to them.
