The name Epictetus is a slave nickname, meaning "bought up". The great Roman stoic philosopher was born a slave, but died a free man, in his old age, having managed to win great fame and gain the patronage of the Emperor Hadrian himself. Like Socrates, Epictetus left no books behind, preferring to share his wisdom in lively conversation with his faithful disciples. However, his precepts were written down by others, his wise speeches were quoted in their works by eminent scholars, and thus fragments of Epictetus' precepts have survived to this day. This edition contains a translation of Epictetus' "Conversations" by Vladimir Chertkov, a close friend and associate of Leo Tolstoy, as well as aphorisms, which are excerpts from the works of various authors, collected by the classical philologist Vasily Alexeev.
