Violence is often called the “dark underbelly” of religion – and indeed, it has invariably accompanied all religious traditions of the world, from the era of archaic sacrifices to 21st-century jihadism. But why, if all religions speak of love, peace, and universal harmony, do they wage endless wars? With this question in mind, Mark Juergensmeyer went to radical Christians in the US and Northern Ireland, Jewish zealots, intifada architects in Palestine, and refugees from the Middle East, to Sikh activists in India, and Buddhists in Myanmar and Japan. The result is this book – the most authoritative study to date devoted to religious terror and the connection between religion and violence in general. The key to this connection, the author argues, is the idea of a “cosmic war,” which refers both to the eternal confrontation between light and darkness and to the worldly wars waged by believers in all world religions against those they consider enemies. Images of war and sacrifice smolder deep within every religious tradition, poised to transform from symbol into reality, and globalization, political ambitions, and the historical fates of the 20th and 21st centuries add fuel to this fire. Mark Juergensmeyer is a professor emeritus of sociology and global studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
