Boris Vasiliev's works have become classics of Russian literature. They have been translated into many languages and adapted for film. Among them are "The Dawns Here Are Quiet...," "Tomorrow Was War," "Don't Shoot the White Swans," "Not Listed," and the "Gentlemen Officers" duology, which began Vasiliev's work on a kind of family saga, spanning the lives of several generations of the noble Oleksin family over two centuries.

These works tell the story of the writer's own family, beginning with the "notes" of his great-great-grandfather, Lieutenant Alexander Alekseyev of the Pskov Regiment, who was a friend of Pushkin, who became one of the novel's heroes. Boris Vasiliev considered these works to be his most significant work. "I paid tribute not to my ancestors," Vasiliev wrote, "but to the best representatives of the great Russian intelligentsia." And the history of the noble Oleksin family "became a story of courage, honor, and dignity of the loyal sons and daughters of a Russia forever lost to oblivion."

This edition includes the novels "The Gambler and the Swordsman, the Gambler and the Duelist," "Assuage My Sorrows...," "And There Was Evening, and There Was Morning," "The House That Grandfather Built," and "Greetings from Baba Lera."
