All people, without exception, must face illness and the death of those around them during their earthly lives. This is the fate of man in the fall. Holy Scripture also testifies to this: "The days of our years are seventy years, or, if we have strength, eighty years; yet the greater part of them is labor and sorrow" (Psalm 89:10).
The letters of Saint Ignatius (Brianchaninov), included in this collection, contain many words of comfort for those facing similar sorrows. The saint himself bore the cross of sorrows and illnesses from his youth, but, strengthened by his faith in God and His Holy Providence, he endured all adversity and grew from strength to strength. His words, seasoned with grace, will help one endure illness and loss with benefit to the soul.
