Valentin Rasputin's touching autobiographical story "French Lessons" is written from the perspective of an eleven-year-old boy. At the same age, in the same 1948, the future writer left, and was the only one from the village, for the regional center to continue his education, also starved among strangers, but studied well, since he was both smart and diligent. The French teacher in the story and in the writer's life had the same name - Lydia Mikhailovna...

"I needed to return to people the good that they once did for me," Valentin Rasputin explained the appearance of "French Lessons." "I wrote this story in the hope that the lessons taught to me in my time would touch the souls of both young and adult readers."
And so it turned out. First published in 1973 in the Irkutsk youth newspaper, in the issue dedicated to the memory of Alexander Vampilov, the story "French Lessons" was read by millions of children and adults, it entered the golden fund of Russian literature. In 1981, the artist Vladimir Galdyaev made drawings incredibly consonant with the text, they are reproduced in this edition.
