The poor, left without support and means of subsistence, often became Dostoevsky's heroes. In the novel "Humiliated and Insulted" (written immediately after the exile), the author shows us the heroes who find themselves in a deplorable situation, and tries to find the underlying causes of such a state.
The study of human psychology led the classicist to the idea that selfishness can be not just "predatory" and cynical (as in the schemer with a dark past, Prince Valkonsky), but also "sacrificial" (in the case of Natasha Ikhmeneva, blinded by love) and even "suffering" (as in her proud father, Nikolai Ikhmeneva).
