The first publication of "The Insulted and the Humiliated" took place in 1861. The story is told from the perspective of Ivan Petrovich, the ward of a small landowner. Full of hopes to consolidate his nascent literary fame, the young man unwittingly becomes a witness to the hardships, strife, and moral turmoil of others as events unfold. On the cold streets of turbulent St. Petersburg, Dostoevsky depicts polished members of high society and desperate sufferers forced to beg. The author exposes the depths of social inequality, analyzes human nature, and addresses the theme of religion. Fyodor Mikhailovich subsequently explored the themes explored in "The Insulted and the Humiliated" in his "pentateuch" of works. During Dostoevsky's lifetime, critics received the novel with mixed reviews, but today "The Insulted and the Humiliated" is highly valued by readers worldwide. In this edition, the text of the novel is decorated with wonderful illustrations by Maxim Gennadievich Sharaev (1963).
