This book is devoted to the uniforms, equipment, and weapons of the Russian Navy during the reigns of Emperors Alexander III and Nicholas II, as well as the period of the Provisional Government, i.e., from March 1881 to October 1917. During this era, the Navy underwent rapid development, which led to various organizational and staffing innovations. In accordance with their missions, the division of warships into classes changed, the organizational structure was reformed, and a submarine fleet and naval aviation emerged. The number of technical specialists in the Navy steadily increased, and their functions became increasingly diverse. Entire categories of naval ranks emerged, such as naval conductors and naval midshipmen. The corps of the Naval Department and the naval education system were repeatedly reformed. All of this had a significant impact on the uniforms and insignia of naval sailors, which were modified and supplemented in accordance with the demands of the times.
This book is the first published work in Russia to provide a detailed examination of the evolution of Russian naval uniforms during the reigns of Alexander III, Nicholas II, and the Provisional Government. It is a logical continuation of the book "Uniforms of the Russian Navy. 1855–1881," from which it inherited its structural design. The book is divided into a general section, which examines uniform changes affecting all or a significant portion of naval personnel, and chapters devoted to specific uniform changes for various categories (admirals, members of the imperial retinue, naval crews, educational institutions, etc.). Due to the extensive information contained herein, the book is divided into two volumes.
The first volume includes information on general uniform changes, as well as on the uniforms of admirals and generals of the naval department, naval officers of the imperial retinue, officers of the Naval Ministry, adjutants, and members of the Guards and naval crews. In writing this book, extensive use was made of both published sources (regulatory documents of the Navy Department, reference literature of the time) and archival materials.
Illustrations include graphic documents from archival collections, historical photographs from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and photographs of authentic naval uniforms from Russian and foreign museum and private collections. Much of the information presented in the book is being published for the first time. This publication is intended for a wide audience, including museum and educational institution employees, theater and film artists, fans of military history miniatures, military history reenactors, and anyone interested in the history of the Russian Navy.
