Vyacheslav Shishkov's "Gloomy River" is a saga about three generations of the Gromov merchant family, and the first large-scale work about the lives of Siberian gold miners at the turn of the 20th century. The novel draws on real-life accounts and the author's own personal experience, who spent twenty years working in Siberia as a research engineer. The everyday life and mood of the time are faithfully depicted, and the harsh beauty and wild nature of the Siberian taiga are lovingly conveyed. The protagonist, Prokhor Gromov, faces a moral dilemma: he makes a decision and enters into a struggle with fate.
This gripping, adventurous, and at the same time dramatic narrative has captivated every generation of readers. The novel was successfully adapted into films in 1968 and 2021.
