This is the story of a man who lived a whole century, only to be struck by a terminal illness.
A wondrous future awaits young physician Josef Kaplan, a star of the Parisian dance halls: the freedom-loving Paris of the 1930s is intoxicating, and medicine opens its doors. Life takes Josef to Algeria, where he specializes in tropical diseases, treating local peasants and fighting the plague epidemic. But he is powerless against the brown plague that has bled Europe dry, and against the sticky atmosphere of universal surveillance and suspicion that thickens in his homeland, socialist Czechoslovakia, after the war.
In the toxic environment in which Josef finds himself, only the fleeting joy of friendship and love remains uncorrupted, and man gradually resigns himself, becomes silent, and blends into the crowd. But one day, fate brings Josef face to face with a mysterious patient—a Latin American man known to the secret services as Ramon, whom they guard like the apple of their eye and never let out of their sight. He, too, was destined for a terminally ill life, a very short one at that, yet Ramon chose to live it differently...
Jean-Michel Ghenassia (b. 1950) came to great literature relatively late in life, and with his debut novel, The Club of Incorrigible Optimists, he won the 2009 Prix Goncourt des Lycées. His second novel, The Extraordinary Life of Ernesto Che, is every bit as profound, sweeping, poignant, and brilliant as his first. Ghenassia paints a gigantic fresco—a dizzying panorama stretching beyond the horizon—and a multi-faceted tale of living people who have seen and understood much. Everything passes, and nothing passes without leaving a trace. Life sparkles, bubbles, trembles, lasts, lasts, lasts. History does not stop even when darkness falls on the world.
