Josephine Tay (real name Elizabeth Mackintosh; 1896-1952) was a celebrated writer, the daughter of a Scotsman and an Englishwoman, and a recognized master of the British detective. In 1929 she debuted with the book "The Man in the Queue", in which for the first time appeared Inspector Alan Grant of Scotland Yard (later the hero of five more of her novels). Inspector trusts his own intuition, but not indiscriminately: he carefully weighs all the evidence, listening carefully to eyewitness testimony, and even if, it would seem, all the evidence against the suspect, Alan Grant will not leave untested any evidence. In short, finding himself in a difficult situation, anyone would dream of such a conscientious police inspector! The collection includes three novels from the cycle: "Killer in the crowd, or Man of the line" (1929), "Shilling for candles" (1936) and "Case of the kidnapping of Betty Kane" (1948). Based on the second of these, Alfred Hitchcock directed the 1937 film The Young and the Innocent; the novel The Case of the Betty Kane Kidnapping was followed by film versions in 1951 and 1962 (under the title The Franchise Affair) and a 1988 television series.
