An abandoned English estate. A missing portrait. A murdered caretaker.
This isn't the inheritance she expected...
After surviving the death of her mother, a divorce, and the loss of her publishing job over the past year, American Jo Jones suddenly inherits a family estate in North Yorkshire. What awaits her, however, isn't a luxurious palace, but a gloomy mansion that has been empty for over a hundred years. With a hole in the roof, mold in the corners, a neglected garden, and a nearly rotted library. However, Jo, with her encyclopedic knowledge but her shyness when interacting with people, isn't intimidated by this. She enthusiastically sets about restoring the estate and researching the history of a family she knows almost nothing about.
Then Jo discovers the lifeless body of her new home's caretaker, with three bullet wounds in his back. And she realizes she could become the prime suspect in the murder. Meanwhile, a special portrait disappears from a secret room in the mansion, strangely connected to the discovered corpse and the mysterious history of her family.
With the help of a Welsh antiques dealer, a grim local detective, and the pub owner's wife, Jo must find the missing painting. Along the way, she must uncover the deeply disturbing secrets of the small town and her own family. And she must do all this before the killer strikes again...
