This set includes three books by St. Simeon the New Theologian:
The works of St. Simeon the New Theologian (949-1022), a prominent Byzantine mystical writer, reflect the unique qualities of his personality. The central theme of his writings is an encounter with Christ Himself, which spiritually transforms a person. A personal experience of communion with God, according to St. Simeon, is essential for salvation and is accessible at all times to every believer in Christ and His eternal Gospel (Rev. 14:6), for Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Heb. 13:8).
The first volume of this edition of St. Simeon's works includes his spiritual sermons (1-52).
The second volume contains a continuation of these spiritual sermons (53-92), as well as theological chapters. The appendix to the second volume contains the ascetic sermon of St. Simeon's spiritual father, the elder Simeon the Pious. The translation of the first two volumes of his works was completed by Saint Theophan the Recluse from the Modern Greek translation of Dionysius of Zagoreia.
The third volume, "Divine Hymns," by St. Simeon the New Theologian occupies a special place in patristic literature. An ascetic and mystic, a theologian and poet, and at the same time a pastor and teacher of life in Christ, he dared to confide his innermost and prayerful experience to his words, addressing these words not to "philosophers and sages," but to everyone who seeks an encounter with the Son of Man in their hearts—in every walk of life and at all times. This edition of St. Simeon's hymns, translated by Hieromonk Panteleimon (Uspensky), constitutes the third and final volume of his works. A detailed article by the translator, preceding the hymns, and a subject index to all three volumes, compiled by priest P. Florensky, will help the reader penetrate deeper into the spiritual world of Saint Simeon and, perhaps, at least in part, become his interlocutor and fellow prayer partner.
