The novel, first published in 1866 and perceived by Hugo himself as the final part of a trilogy about man's struggle with the opposing forces of superstition (The Hunchback of Notre Dame), social injustice (Les Miserables) and, of course, destructive natural elements (accordingly, The Toilers of the Sea), is one of the most fascinating works of the great writer, which is still read with unflagging interest. The old shipowner Lethieri is threatened with ruin - a thieving captain, trying to hide his crimes, drove his steamship "Duranda" onto the reefs. The beautiful Deruchette, Lethieri's niece, in despair promises to marry the one who will save at least the steam engine of the ship. And then the young fisherman Gilliat, secretly in love with her, sets off on a dangerous expedition, not yet knowing that he will have to deal with a nightmare there much more terrible than rocks and storms...
