The novels "The Financier", "Titan" and "Stoic", united under the general title "Trilogy of Desire", are the most famous works of the famous American realist writer of the first half of the XX century Theodore Dreiser. Clearly showing the immorality of the financial world of the United States, they prove that money itself can not make a person happy. All the novels of the trilogy in this edition are illustrated with drawings by contemporary artist Tatiana Kosach.
When in May 1933 the works of authors undesirable to the Nazis flew into the bonfire on Berlin's Operplatz Square, among the flaming books were the works of Theodore Dreiser. By that time he had already published his most famous works - "Sister Carrie", "The Financier", "Titan", "Genius", "American Tragedy". Contained in them burning truth of life was unbearable for any totalitarian regime, and although Dreiser exposed the vices of American capitalism, the Nazis correctly felt that with such a truth-teller their power will not get along. Dreiser knew exactly what he was writing about. He had lost his father early in life. To make ends meet, he had to work and newspaper delivery boy, and dishwasher. University in Indiana had to drop out - not enough money to study. But the twenty-year-old Theodore turned out of a vigorous journalist. He began to cooperate with newspapers in Chicago, Pittsburgh and New York. However, Dreiser soon became disillusioned and in bourgeois journalism, and in the praised American values, "... contrary to our boastful democracy and equality of opportunity, here is the same poverty and squalor ..." - he bitterly remarked on the pages of his diary. He decided to spill the bitter truth of life onto the pages of his own writings. It is not surprising that the first novel Dreiser "Sister Carrie" critics considered cynical, immoral and redolent. Also at first his novels "The Financier", "Titan" and "The Stoic" were received in the bayonet, because they exposed the cynicism and soullessness of the world of capital. Only later did the American establishment heartily recognized that Dreiser's novels are not only great literature, but also a completely new and fresh stream in the American cultural environment. Previously, only Mark Twain could write so freely among American authors. At the same time, Dreiser did not impress readers with the refinements of style. His texts resembled the reports of a pathologist who impassively recorded the cause of death of a deceased person. Such a corpse from the writer's point of view was American society in the first half of the XX century. In our time Dreiser is justly considered a bright representative of American naturalism and critical realism in literature. His novels are translated into many languages of the world. All works of Dreiser's famous trilogy in this edition are illustrated with drawings by contemporary St. Petersburg artist Tatiana Kosach. She is a specialist in the art of the Middle Ages - she graduated from the History Department of St. Petersburg State University. Her iconographic and graphic works can be found in private collections of art lovers in Russia, USA, Italy and France. Tatiana Kosach's graphics have illustrated about 40 books.
