The book takes its name from the word "trebnik," which in Old Russian meant "sacrifice," "oblation," "prayer," and "performance of a sacred rite." Nowadays, the word "trebnik" refers to prayers and sacred rites performed at the request (according to needs) of one or more Christians in special circumstances of their lives. The first part contains the rites of the Sacraments: Baptism, Chrismation, Marriage, Unction, Penance—and other Divine services. With these prayers, the Orthodox Church greets a person at birth, sanctifies their life, and guides them as they pass into eternity. Furthermore, this part of the Trebnik contains three additional chapters, containing a calendar of menology, an alphabetical index of saints, and the Paschalia. The second part of the Trebnik contains prayers for various liturgical and religious rituals.
