"Jamaica Tavern" - one of the most famous novels of the English writer Daphne Dumorier (1907-1989), her first really big success, followed two years later by the triumph of "Rebecca". Today, the novel is considered a classic of the Gothic tradition in twentieth-century literature, and the heroine Mary Yellan is compared to Jane Eyre. The events described in the novel unfold in the early nineteenth century, against the backdrop of the magical landscapes of Cornwall, its heathlands and coastal cliffs. In full accordance with the laws of the genre orphaned Mary leaves her native land and goes to her relatives - a childless aunt and her husband, Joss Merlin, a rude and unsociable owner of a roadside inn "Jamaica". The institution is notorious, good people avoid it, and meanwhile it lives its strange and terrible life. Gradually Mary begins to guess about something, in her head are swarming terrible suspicions, but who to tell about them? A mistake could cost her dearly ... In 1939 Alfred Hitchcock made a movie based on the novel with Charles Lawton and Maureen O'Hara - the first of his screen adaptations of Dumaurier's books, and in 1983 came the English TV series starring Jane Seymour.
