Have you ever wondered what effectiveness is? Most likely, your answer will be something like "the degree of proximity to the intended goal". And that would be the answer of a real European! But Julien, a Frenchman, decided to find out what representatives of another culture, namely the Chinese culture, think about it. François Julien (1951) is a French philosopher, sinologist, translator of Chinese philosophy. He is a researcher of Chinese and European thought tradition, including anthropology, ethics, philosophy of the image. He studied at École Normale (1972-1977), continued his studies at the universities of Beijing and Shanghai. Doctor of Philology (1983). Fellow of the French-Japanese House in Tokyo (1985-1987). President of the French Association for Chinese Studies (1988-1990). President of the International College of Philosophy (1995-1998). Teaches at the University of Paris VII - Denis Diderot. Head of the Marcel Granet Center, director of the Institute of Contemporary Thought. Quote from the book: "One cannot achieve anything by force, but can only lose, because the term in power is limited, and a high rank breeds rivals. But it is enough to rely on the natural inclination due to power, so that people themselves will lead you to glory and triumph. This conclusion is transferable from strategy to other areas, even if the starting positions are directly opposed (moral values vs. personal well-being). You do not even need to 'strive' for the result - the effect appears by itself as a consequence of the reflection of favorable circumstances, it naturally follows from them and becomes 'inevitable'".
