The Chinese military treatise, one of the seven classical treatises, is often named after its creator Wei Liao-tzu. Probably, the work was created at the end of the IV century BC, in the era of the Warring Kingdoms.
Wei Liao-tzu, according to one of the testimonies, studied with Shang Yang, a famous legalist theorist and statesman who advocated the creation of a strong centralized power that controlled the people and resources of the state. According to another version, Wei Liao was the chief adviser to the first Qin Emperor during the fierce struggle for the unification of China.
Be that as it may, Wei Liao was a brilliant strategist and subtle thinker who understood that only the unity of the military and civil can ensure the survival of the state in the troubled era of the Warring States.
