"The Tragedy of Mr. Morn" (1924), the largest and most significant work of Vladimir Nabokov until the mid-1920s, was not published during the author's lifetime. For the first time, a hundred years after its creation, it comes out in a separate edition. The sharp plot of "Tragedy", shifting levels of reality and illusion, fantasy and colorful, according to B. Boyd, anticipated the style of mature Nabokov, especially such of his mystery novels as "Solus Rex" and "Pale Fire". The classic plot with a love triangle, treason, escape and revenge is overlaid with Nabokov's finely delineated other plan of reality, in which only the magic of creativity can transform the terrible reality of the rebellious northern capital of a brilliant but doomed kingdom. The edition is equipped with commentary and an Appendix, which contains a prose summary of "Tragedy", working notes, early versions and new archival materials.
