In his landmark work Totem and Taboo, Sigmund Freud, based on the work of the most prominent anthropologists, ethnologists, and psychologists of his time and using the methodology of psychoanalysis, attempted to trace the origins of our fears, complexes, and moral and ethical norms by comparing the customs of primitive tribes and the social and moral prohibitions of civilized society. In a later article, "The Future of One Illusion," which complemented this collection, he continued and developed his study of the origins of various beliefs and dogmas, and presented his view of the place and future of religion in a socio-cultural context.
It should be noted that "Totem and Taboo" is not only scientifically but also artistically valuable: Thomas Mann admired the literary merits of this work and considered it one of the best examples of German essayism.
