Nadezhda Alexandrovna Lokhvitskaya, the "queen of laughter", known to readers as Taffy, is a bright figure in Russian literature of the first half of the XX century, the author of brilliant humorous stories, immediately loved by both ordinary readers and critics. "She is considered the most entertaining and "funny" writer. And in the long road necessarily take a volume of her stories ..." - wrote Mikhail Zoshchenko. Taffy's works, in which wicked laughter and subtle irony are sometimes combined with a pinching sadness and pity for her characters, were highly appreciated by her contemporaries: Alexander Kuprin and Ivan Bunin, Mark Aldanov and Sasha Cherny. Extraordinarily popular in her homeland and then in the emigrant community, Taffy returned to Russian readers in the early 1990s. Since then, collections of her stories and memoirs have been published one after another. This edition presents Taffy's stories written in different years of her life, including such small masterpieces as "Poruchik Kaspar", "Katenka", "Behind the Wall", etc.; the book also includes Taffy's "Memories" about traveling through the vastness of "swirling" post-revolutionary Russia, one of the author's funniest and most tragic works.
