St. Athanasius of Alexandria (4th century), one of the great Greek Fathers of the Church, apologist and defender of Orthodoxy, left a rich spiritual heritage, including works on the interpretation of Holy Scripture. Already in the epistles preliminary to the "Interpretation..." St. Athanasius gives a certain classification of psalms (narrative, exhortation, thanksgiving, etc.) and on this basis gives instructions to readers in what circumstances what psalms should be read. Directly in "Interpretations..." the saint reveals both the historical and spiritual and moral background of the content of the psalms, explains words and expressions that may seem incomprehensible.
The book will be useful and edifying to every Christian: in its content he will be able to find guidance, consolation and advice for his most diverse states, external and internal. "In the Psalms we recognize the movements of our souls, and all of them are as if they were spoken of us, and are as if they were our own words, serving...for the correction of our own life," and this is their uniqueness.
