General Saad el-Shazly has an impeccable record. He is considered the "Arab Margelov" - the creator of Egypt's airborne forces. He was commander of the United Arab Forces in the Congo (1960-1961), Egypt's military attaché in London (1961-1963), commander of the Special Forces (1967-1969), commander of the Red Sea District (1970-1971). The crowning achievement of his military career was the post of Chief of General Staff of the Egyptian Armed Forces and the forcing of the Suez Canal and the subsequent capture of the once impregnable Bar Lev line in the 1973 Arab-Israeli war. This brilliant result was ruined by the decision of Egyptian leader Anwar Sadat to get rid of Soviet military aid and fight on his own. The stroppy Chief of the General Staff was made the scapegoat. General el-Shazli's book reveals the little-known pages of the Middle East conflicts. It talks about the role of the USSR in building the armed forces of Egypt after the "Six Day War" in 1967, describes in detail the course of the new war that started so successfully and its tragic end for Egypt.
