This book focuses on the events of October 1942 in the South Pacific. The United States and Japan began a protracted and bloody struggle for the island of Guadalcanal. Around it for six months played out more sea battles than anywhere else in the Second World War. They lost dozens of ships - from battleships and aircraft carriers to torpedo boats. It was the Battle of Guadalcanal that American historians consider a turning point in the war in the Pacific, as it was there that the U.S. first went on the offensive.
In October, both sides were preparing for a decisive battle. The Japanese were feverishly moving reinforcements there to launch a general offensive. Every night destroyers and cruisers landed soldiers and equipment - their regular flights led to the term "Tokyo Express". Unfortunately, there were no serious works in Russian about this very interesting page of the Second World War.
A special place in the book is occupied by the description of the night battle at Cape Esperance, in which American cruisers for the first time defeated the Japanese. This had not only military, but also a great moral significance for the American fleet, which in early August received a terrible blow after the defeat at Savo Island.
Information from American war diaries and action reports, as well as documents from Senshi Sosho, the official Japanese military history, were used in the preparation of this book.
