The famous novel by Belgian writer Charles de Coster about the adventures of the cunning merrymaker Til Ulenspiegel not only made his author famous, but also entered the golden fund of world literature. The novel reflects the events that took place in the XVI century, when the proud Flanders was under the rule of Spain and suffered from the cruelty of the Catholic Inquisition. Young Til Ulenspiegel is a joker and prankster, but with a good heart and a noble soul. He was born in the family of coal miner Klaas in the same year as the future Spanish King Philip II, a heartless tyrant. Til's parents lived peacefully and worked honestly, but one day a terrible disaster came to their home - and the young man decided to fight for his homeland, to save it from the oppression of the Spaniards. Together with his faithful friend Lamme Gudzak he goes wandering through Flanders and in time becomes a skillful warrior, but does not lose his nobility and wit. Mocking Ulenspiegel fights Spanish invaders, punishes snooty nobles, rescues prisoners, takes part in sea battles and even becomes a ship's captain. The book is illustrated with realistic graphic works by Yuri Bogachev
