The prototype for one of the characters in "And Quiet Flows the Don"—the leader of the Veshensky Uprising described in the novel—recalled how the Cossacks, after reading the book, would ask, "Who did he serve in your headquarters, this Sholokhov, who so thoroughly overcame and depicted everything with his thought?" Even those who participated in those events had no idea: the author of the "Cossack War and Peace" was still a teenager during the First World War and the Civil War. The young writer, who had only completed four years of high school (though he was self-educated), began work on "And Quiet Flows the Don" at the age of twenty-three. He completed the work two decades later, a renowned public figure and the recipient of numerous awards, including the Nobel Prize in 1965. Receiving the highest literary award, Sholokhov said: "The novel... most predisposes us to a profound understanding of the vast life that surrounds us, rather than to attempts to present our own small self as the center of the universe." The exploration of this "vast life," in which historical events are inseparable from the destinies of ordinary people, is what "Quiet Flows the Don" is all about.
