Shadows and Enlightenment
14.99 €
This book by the British art historian Michael Baxandall (1933-2008), one of the founders of visual culture studies, is organized around several questions intertwined in its title. How important was the problem of the shadow in the scientific and artistic pursuits of the Enlightenment, how were these pursuits interconnected, and how did they resonate in the informatics of the second half of the twentieth century? What is the Enlightenment significance of the shadow, that is, what is its cognitive value? Finally, what is the technical function of the shadow in perception, in the visual arts, and in information technologies such as robotics? Behind all these questions lies the more general problem of understanding shadow as a cognitive phenomenon, and around them an interdisciplinary network is forming, revealing unexpected and instructive intersections between eighteenth-century physics and optics, rococo painting, and developments in artificial intelligence in the 1970s and 1980s.
