The novel of the outstanding Catalan writer Jaume Cabré "Shadow of the Eunuch" - a funny and sad story of a sentimental and amorous lover of art, a scion of the ancient family of Gensana, who in search of the Way, Truth and Life devoted his student years to the armed struggle for justice. "The Eunuch's Shadow" is a novel permeated with literary and musical allusions. Like Alban Berg's Violin Concerto, whose structure it mirrors, the book is a kind of "double requiem." It is dedicated to the "memory of an angel," Therese, and sounds like a requiem of the protagonist, Mikel Gensana, for himself. The short story sounds like a suicide confession. The hero finds himself in the house where his childhood years passed (by cruel will of chance, the family nest has turned into a fashionable restaurant). Like Berg's Concerto, the novel tells the fates of all the beloved and lost beings associated with Gensan's house.
