The novel by the distinguished Catalan writer Jaume Cabré, "The Shadow of the Eunuch," is a humorous and sad story of a sentimental and amorous art lover, a scion of the ancient Gensana family, who, in search of the Way, Truth, and Life, dedicated his student years to armed struggle for justice. "The Shadow of the Eunuch" is a novel permeated with literary and musical allusions. Like Alban Berg's Violin Concerto, whose structure it mirrors, the book is a unique "double requiem." Dedicated to the "memory of an angel," Teresa, it also sounds like the protagonist's, Miquel Gensana's, requiem for himself. The story reads like a deathbed confession. The protagonist finds himself in the house where he spent his childhood (by a cruel twist of fate, the family home has been transformed into a fashionable restaurant). Like Berg's concerto, the novel recounts the destinies of all the loved and lost souls connected to the Gensana house.
