The collection of works by film critic and candidate of art history Olga Surkova, who turned out to be a long-term interviewer of Andrei Tarkovsky since her student years, has an undeniable and unique value of a documentary source. From 1965 to 1984, Surkova constantly covered the work of the director, cooperating with him in close contact, recording his reflections on the problems of cinematic specificity, the place of cinema among other arts, the role and purpose of the artist. Numerous interviews made by the author at different times and in different circumstances create a feeling of close communication with the Master. And notes from the set give the impression of a presence in the working moments of creating his paintings. Surkova also managed to continue her observations of the director’s fate abroad. Summarizing what he saw and heard, the author of the collection not only comments on the statements of Tarkovsky, but also explores in his works the features of his work, explaining in his own way the significance and drama of his fate. Suddenly, the director’s complex worldview is brightened with new colors in comparison with Ingmar Bergman, to whom Tarkovsky repeatedly addressed in his reflections on cinema. Surkovaya also managed to see Tarkovsky’s theatrical works in Moscow and London, describing his production of Boris Godunov in Covent Garden and Hamlet in Lencom, conversations about which Surkova collected in the form of a three-act play. She also managed to record an informal conversation in Rome between two prominent Russian filmmakers, A. Tarkovsky and G. Panfilov, and for writing a press conference in Milan where Tarkovsky explained his intention to continue working in the West.
