"The largest tank battle" was called by the Western press the battle for Kharkov in May 1942, which became the last catastrophe of the Red Army, which lost here more than a quarter of a million soldiers and 1,250 tanks. It was the tank corps that was to become the main trump card of the Red Army in the Kharkov offensive operation. It was Panzer divisions of the Panzerwaffe that made the fatal counterattacks, turning the course of the battle in their favor and closing the "ring" of encirclement in the "Barvenkovo trap". And the delay with the introduction of Soviet tank reserves into the battle was one of the main reasons for the defeat, about which Stalin told the leadership of the South-Western Front: "Within some three weeks, the South-Western Front, thanks to its frivolity, not only lost the half-won Kharkov operation, but managed to still give the enemy 18-20 divisions .... If we were to inform the country in its entirety about the disaster that the front has experienced and is still experiencing, I am afraid that you would be treated very coolly..." This book by a leading armored historian sheds light on the role of tanks in the Kharkov tragedy that ultimately led to the Wehrmacht's breakthrough to the Caucasus and Stalingrad. The publication is illustrated with hundreds of exclusive photographs.
